1968-2007
Founded by Alan Sugar in 1968, Amstrad grew from a small London trading business into one of Britain's best-known consumer-electronics companies. Its name came from A. M. S. Trading, and the company built its reputation by bringing affordable audio and electronic products to the mass market.
Amstrad entered home computing with the CPC464 in 1984. The CPC range bundled the computer, keyboard and monitor as a complete system, while the later PCW made word processing accessible to homes and small businesses. Amstrad also produced IBM-compatible PCs and acquired Sinclair's computer business in 1986, keeping the Spectrum line alive into the early 1990s.
