Roland Perry was an electronics engineer and one of the central figures in Amstrad's move into computers. Introduced to Alan Sugar through Bill Poel, Perry helped reshape an unsuccessful early computer project into a practical plan for a complete, low-cost home system.
Perry coordinated the specialists behind Project Arnold, the machine that became the Amstrad CPC464. The team included Locomotive Software for BASIC and system software and Mark Jones for hardware and gate-array work. Perry and Poel also recruited software publishers so that the new computer would reach shops with a useful catalogue of games and applications.
As Amstrad's technical manager, Perry remained closely associated with the CPC family and the company's rapid expansion into word processors and personal computers.
