Shang-Zhi Lin founded Xie Zhi Business Enterprise in Taiwan in 1918. The construction and engineering concern completed major public works and later developed into an industrial manufacturer, providing the foundation for the company eventually known as Tatung.
Lin believed that industry depended on education and skilled engineers. He devoted much of his property to an organisation promoting industry and education, a legacy that led to Tatung High School and Tatung University as well as close links between teaching, research and manufacturing.
After his death, later generations expanded the company into motors, appliances, electronics and computers. Tatung's 1980s British computer operation and Einstein systems formed part of the much larger industrial tradition Lin began.
