Amstrad PC6486SX

The Amstrad PC6486SX was the sole model in Amstrad’s PC6000 desktop series. It brought Intel’s 32-bit 80486SX processor to the compact case style used by Amstrad’s earlier PC4386SX and PC5000 machines.

Typical systems used a 25 MHz processor, 4MB of expandable RAM and VGA graphics, offering a practical platform for DOS 5 and Microsoft Windows applications in the early 1990s.

Notable Features
  • Only known model in Amstrad’s PC6000 desktop series.
  • 25 MHz 80486SX processor and 4MB RAM, expandable to 32MB.
  • Continued the compact desktop styling of the PC5000 family.
Historical Significance
  • Marked Amstrad’s transition from 286 and 386 systems to the 486 generation.
  • Used increasingly standard PC components rather than the more distinctive architecture of Amstrad’s earliest compatibles.
Collectors Notes
  • Documentation and complete systems are comparatively scarce.
  • Check the backup battery and storage devices before powering a long-stored example.
