Compaq Computer Corporation was founded in Houston, Texas, in 1982 by Rod Canion, Jim Harris and Bill Murto. Its first product, the Compaq Portable, combined a transportable design with a carefully developed clean-room BIOS that delivered a high degree of IBM PC compatibility.
Compaq became one of the defining PC manufacturers of the 1980s and 1990s. Landmark systems included the Deskpro 386, which brought Intel’s 80386 to market before IBM, the LTE notebook family, the SystemPro server and the consumer Presario range. The company merged with Hewlett-Packard in 2002.
