Compaq Deskpro 386

The Compaq Deskpro 386 was the first commercially available personal computer built around Intel’s 32-bit 80386 processor. It combined a 16 MHz CPU with Compaq’s PC-compatible architecture and high-performance storage options.

By bringing the 386 to market before IBM, Compaq showed that leadership in the compatible-PC market had moved beyond following IBM’s timetable. The machine became a landmark in the rise of the industry-standard PC platform.

Notable Features
  • First commercial 80386-based personal computer
  • 32-bit processor with compatibility for existing DOS applications
