William H. “Bill” Murto worked with Rod Canion and Jim Harris at Texas Instruments before the three founded Compaq Computer Corporation in 1982. Murto brought sales and marketing experience to the partnership as it developed a business plan for a portable IBM-compatible computer.
As a senior Compaq executive, Murto helped position the Compaq Portable for business buyers and supported the dealer strategy behind the company’s exceptional early growth. The product proved that a new manufacturer could compete through compatibility, engineering and distribution rather than by simply copying IBM’s hardware and firmware.
