Toshiba’s roots stretch back to two pioneering Japanese electrical and telegraph businesses founded in the nineteenth century. The company entered personal computing with proprietary Japanese systems and MSX machines before becoming one of the world’s most influential portable-PC manufacturers.
The 1985 T1100 helped establish the battery-powered clamshell IBM-compatible laptop as a practical commercial product. Toshiba developed that lead through the T1000 and T1200 laptops, powerful gas-plasma transportables such as the T3100 and T5200, and later miniature notebooks including the Libretto.
