Atsutoshi Nishida joined Toshiba in 1975 and became closely involved with its international computer business. After studying the American market, he argued that Toshiba should pursue a portable IBM-compatible computer rather than another conventional desktop.
Nishida led and financed the commercial effort behind the T1100, promising Toshiba management that the machine could sell 10,000 units in its first year. The successful 1985 launch established Toshiba as a leader in laptop computers. Nishida later led Toshiba’s PC operations internationally and served as company president from 2005 to 2009.
