Torakusu Yamaha was a watchmaker and medical-equipment repairer who successfully repaired a school reed organ in 1887. He then built his own organ and established the enterprise that became Nippon Gakki, later renamed Yamaha Corporation.
The company combined musical knowledge with increasingly sophisticated electronics, producing organs, synthesizers and digital sound chips. That heritage ultimately led to the CX5M and related MSX music computers, which paired computing with FM synthesis, MIDI and music keyboards.
