Panasonic FS-A1ST

The FS-A1ST introduced the MSX turbo R generation with a fast R800 processor alongside a compatible Z80A core, 256 KB RAM, floppy drive and PCM audio recording.

It was the first major architectural performance step beyond the Z80-based MSX generations while preserving a large body of existing software.

Notable Features
  • Switchable R800 and Z80-compatible processors
  • 8-bit PCM recording and playback
  • MSX-MUSIC, MSX-DOS 2 and built-in floppy drive
Historical Significance
  • It was the first major architectural performance step beyond the Z80-based MSX generations while preserving a large body of existing software.
Collector’s Notes
  • The proprietary floppy drive belt, internal microphone and Japanese 100-volt power requirements deserve attention.
  • Memory, storage, displays and expansion hardware should be documented because configurations often changed during a system’s working life.
