Fujitsu FM77AV40SX

The Fujitsu FM77AV40SX was the final and most advanced member of the FM77AV family. It expanded the colour palette to approximately 260,000 colours, retained dual 640KB drives and included video digitisation facilities.

Arriving as Fujitsu prepared the 32-bit FM Towns, the SX represented the peak of the company’s 6809-based architecture. It preserved compatibility while extracting striking audio-visual performance from an 8-bit design.

Notable Features
  • Expanded the palette to roughly 260,000 colours.
  • Included video digitisation and dual 640KB floppy drives.
Historical Significance
  • The technical culmination of Fujitsu’s FM-7/FM-77 6809 architecture.
  • Released only months before the radically different FM Towns.
Collector’s Notes
  • It is one of the scarcer and most desirable FM77AV variants.
  • Correct displays, digitiser accessories and software are largely confined to Japan.
