Fujitsu FM77AV40

The Fujitsu FM77AV40 was the higher-specification partner to the AV20. It increased memory, added a 640x400 display mode and supplied stronger Japanese text support while preserving the AV’s 4,096-colour low-resolution graphics.

Dual 640KB floppy drives and its broader display modes made the AV40 better suited to productivity and creative work as well as games. It led directly to the AV40EX and AV40SX.

Notable Features
  • Added a 640x400 eight-colour mode to the AV graphics system.
  • More memory and standard Japanese text support distinguished it from the AV20.
Historical Significance
  • Established Fujitsu’s premium 8-bit AV configuration.
  • Became the parent of the enhanced EX and SX models.
Collector’s Notes
  • The AV40 is physically and technically close to later EX machines.
  • Confirm the exact suffix before sourcing memory or video accessories.
