Fujitsu FM R-70

The Fujitsu FM R-70 was the high-performance 32-bit member of the FM R business-computer family. Its 16 MHz Intel 80386DX, expandable memory and high-resolution Japanese display system made it a workstation-class machine for demanding office, engineering and publishing applications.

The FM R series succeeded the FM16 Beta while retaining Fujitsu’s Japanese-language software environment. The R-70 added optional 80387 arithmetic processing, substantial hard-disk storage and support for MS-DOS, Japanese OS/2 and Kanji XENIX.

Notable Features
  • Full 32-bit 80386DX processor with an optional 80387 coprocessor.
  • High-resolution 1120x750 display suited detailed Japanese text and graphics.
  • Memory expanded to 10MB for large business and technical applications.
Historical Significance
  • Added a 32-bit high-end workstation to the FM R family in 1987.
  • Extended the architecture developed from the FM16 Beta into professional multi-operating-system use.
Collector’s Notes
  • The R-70 was sold in storage and display configurations tailored to customer installations.
  • Matching high-resolution monitors, Japanese software and expansion hardware are uncommon outside Japan.
