Gerard Leonard Frederik Philips trained as an engineer and founded Philips & Co. with his father Frederik in Eindhoven in 1891. Gerard concentrated on technology and manufacturing as the young company improved electric incandescent lamps and established its own industrial research capability.
Philips grew far beyond lighting into radio, television, recording, components and professional electronics. That breadth later supported the company’s P2000 computers and its major role in bringing the MSX standard to European homes, schools and small businesses.
