Barry Muncaster is a British technology executive who helped build Tangerine Computer Systems and later led Oric Products International. He joined Paul Johnson during Tangerine’s early development and provided the commercial and operational direction needed to move its designs beyond specialist electronics kits.
Muncaster helped grow the business around the Microtan 65 and Tangerine’s viewdata products. As the British home-computer market expanded, he became managing director of Oric Products International, the company formed in 1982 to finance, manufacture and market a mass-market computer developed by Tangerine.
Under his leadership the Oric-1 was launched in 1983 as a direct competitor to the ZX Spectrum. The improved Oric Atmos followed in 1984. Muncaster managed investment, distribution and international expansion during the company’s rapid rise, although intense competition and production difficulties later forced the British operation into receivership.
