Leonard Tramiel is an American computer engineer and technology executive whose career spans both Commodore and Atari Corporation. The son of Commodore founder Jack Tramiel, he became involved with computers while still young and contributed to Commodore's first personal computer.
During development of the PET 2001, Leonard helped create the PETSCII character set and assisted with testing and quality control. PETSCII supplied letters, symbols and block graphics that became a familiar part of Commodore programming and screen design.
After Jack Tramiel left Commodore and acquired Atari's consumer business in 1984, Leonard joined Atari Corporation. He served as vice-president of software and worked with the teams responsible for the Atari ST family and later projects including the Panther and Jaguar.
Leonard has continued to discuss and preserve the history of both companies through interviews, talks and participation in the vintage-computing community. His recollections provide a technical and personal view of the Tramiel era at Commodore and Atari.
