Computers by Applied Computer Techniques Ltd

Applied Computer Techniques, usually known as ACT, was founded by Roger Foster in Birmingham in 1965 as a computer bureau providing payroll and accounting services. The company expanded into software, distribution and business systems, and became a major British supplier after securing the UK rights to the Sirius 1 computer.

ACT used that experience to develop its own Apricot PC, launched in 1983 with an 8086 processor, high-resolution display and Sony 3.5-inch disk drives. Further Apricot machines followed, and in 1985 the company adopted the Apricot name. ACT's growth from service bureau to computer manufacturer made it an important part of Britain's early business-computing industry.
