Torch TX20

The Torch TX20 used the same triple-processor workstation and D20 storage combination as the CX20, adding the telecommunications facilities denoted by the T prefix. It could run CPN or Unix while linking users through Torch networks and external communications services.

Designed for offices that treated messaging and remote data access as core tasks, the TX20 reflects Torch’s early belief that a personal workstation should be a communications appliance as well as a stand-alone computer.

Notable Features
  • Telecommunications-equipped counterpart to the networked CX20.
  • Combined 6502, Z80B and 68000 processors with floppy and 20MB hard disk storage.
  • Supported Torch electronic mail, networking and remote communications.
Historical Significance
  • An unusually communications-focused British business workstation for the early 1980s.
  • Extended Torch’s connected-computing strategy beyond local Torchnet installations.
Collector’s Notes
  • Telecommunications modules and approval labels help distinguish TX systems from CX models.
  • Preserved configuration disks and modem/network accessories are particularly significant.
