Sinclair ZX Spectrum +2

The Sinclair ZX Spectrum +2 was the first Spectrum launched after Amstrad acquired Sinclair's computer range. Its new grey case incorporated a full-travel keyboard, built-in cassette recorder and two joystick ports while retaining the 128K architecture and software modes of the Toastrack model.

The integrated tape deck made the machine easier to set up as a complete games computer, and the lower price renewed sales. The joystick connectors used Sinclair wiring rather than the widespread Atari standard.

Notable Features
  • Built-in cassette recorder replaced the external tape deck used by earlier Spectrums.
  • Full-travel keyboard and redesigned grey enclosure were derived from Amstrad manufacturing practice.
  • Twin Sinclair-standard joystick ports were fitted to the left side.
Historical Significance
  • The first Amstrad-produced Spectrum and the start of the final major hardware generation.
  • Its successful integrated design kept the Spectrum commercially active after Sinclair's sale.
Collector’s Notes
  • Grey +2 machines differ internally from the later black +2A and +2B.
  • Atari-standard joysticks require an adapter because the port wiring is different.
