Sharp X68000 XVI

The Sharp X68000 XVI delivered the first major processor-speed increase in the family. Released in May 1991, it could run its Motorola 68000 at 16 MHz for improved performance or switch to 10 MHz for compatibility with timing-sensitive software.

With 2MB of RAM, SCSI storage support and updated Human68k software, the XVI is often considered one of the most practical and desirable X68000 models.

Notable Features
  • Selectable 16 MHz and 10 MHz processor speeds.
  • 2MB RAM and standard SCSI interface.
  • XVI-HD configuration included an 80MB hard disk.
Historical Significance
  • Delivered a meaningful performance increase while preserving compatibility with earlier software.
  • Often regarded as an ideal all-round model for the X68000 library.
Collector's Notes
  • The 10 MHz mode is useful for software affected by the faster clock.
  • Original XVI systems command higher collector prices than many earlier models.
