Grundy NewBrain Model AD

The Grundy NewBrain Model AD added a 16-character vacuum-fluorescent display to the Model A computer. The single-line panel could scroll around the normal screen image, allowing calculations and text work without connecting a television or monitor.

Otherwise it retained the NewBrain’s 32KB memory, advanced BASIC, high-resolution external video and broad expansion options. The self-contained display made the AD the range’s most recognisable and portable configuration.

Notable Features
  • Built-in 16-character vacuum-fluorescent display allowed monitor-free operation.
  • Cursor controls scrolled the small display window across the larger virtual screen.
  • Retained the full external video and expansion capabilities of the Model A.
Historical Significance
  • The distinctive fluorescent panel embodied the NewBrain’s original portable-computing ambitions.
  • It is the best-known production version of the machine originally developed at Sinclair Radionics and Newbury.
Collector’s Notes
  • Brightness and missing segments in the fluorescent display should be checked.
  • A complete set may include the optional rechargeable battery module, carrying case and expansion chassis.
