Atari Falcon040

The Atari Falcon040 was an experimental 68040-based successor to the Falcon030, developed in the compact black MicroBox-style desktop enclosure. It was intended to carry Atari’s multimedia computer line beyond the production Falcon with a faster 32-bit processor and greater expansion potential.

Atari cancelled the project during its 1993 withdrawal from the computer business. Several prototype boards or systems are known, but complete specifications were never established publicly and uncertain details should not be treated as production features.

Notable Features
  • Used a Motorola 68040 processor in a compact desktop prototype enclosure.
  • Developed as a faster successor to the Falcon030 multimedia computer.
Historical Significance
  • Cancelled in 1993 as Atari abandoned further computer development.
  • Surviving prototypes show that hardware work progressed, but no commercial specification was finalised.
Collector’s Notes
  • Processor speed, memory and expansion details are not documented reliably enough to present as settled facts.
  • Any surviving Falcon040 hardware is prototype material and may differ from other examples.
