Atari 4160STF

The Atari 4160STF was the planned 4MB flagship of the integrated STF family, presented alongside the 2080STF in September 1986. Its proposed memory capacity reached the practical ceiling of the original ST architecture while otherwise following the familiar 8 MHz 68000 keyboard-computer design.

High memory prices and the development of the 4MB Mega ST made the 4160STF redundant before release. Atari cancelled the model, leaving it as an important sign of the company’s early efforts to extend the ST into more demanding professional work.

Notable Features
  • Planned 4MB version of the integrated STF design.
  • Would have reached the normal memory ceiling of the original ST architecture.
Historical Significance
  • Presented in September 1986 but cancelled before commercial production.
  • The Mega ST 4 provided a more suitable professional platform for the same memory capacity.
Collector’s Notes
  • Most systems described informally as a 4160STF are upgrades rather than factory machines.
  • Surviving Atari-labelled prototype hardware requires strong provenance.
