Apple Macintosh SE

Apple Macintosh SE was introduced in 2 March 1987 as a more expandable compact Macintosh with an internal hard-disk bay, Apple Desktop Bus and processor-direct slot. It used a Motorola 68000 at 7.8336 MHz with 1MB standard; expandable to 4MB. Internal expansion slot supported Ethernet, accelerator and display cards.

The SE modernised the compact Mac for networked offices and classrooms without abandoning the familiar integrated display.

Notable Features
  • Internal expansion slot supported Ethernet, accelerator and display cards.
  • ADB simplified keyboard and pointing-device connections.
  • Later FDHD versions gained a 1.44MB SuperDrive.
Historical Significance
  • The SE modernised the compact Mac for networked offices and classrooms without abandoning the familiar integrated display.
  • Its place in the range reflects Apple's progression from the original compact Macintosh toward broader professional, educational and portable markets.
Collector’s Notes
  • SE and later SE FDHD/SuperDrive revisions should be identified by drive and logic-board details
  • Original keyboards, mice, storage devices and model-specific accessories help document a complete period configuration.
