Apple iMac G3 Bondi Blue

The Apple iMac G3 Bondi Blue reached customers on 15 August 1998. Its translucent all-in-one enclosure combined a 233 MHz PowerPC G3, 15-inch CRT and simple Internet-focused setup while replacing the floppy drive and familiar Macintosh SCSI, serial and ADB connections with USB.

Revision B followed later in 1998 with additional video memory and a revised graphics controller. Both revisions share the distinctive Bondi blue and ice case, so they are recorded together as the first hardware generation rather than as separate colour variants.

Notable Features
  • Translucent Bondi blue and ice all-in-one case designed around a 15-inch CRT.
  • The first mainstream Macintosh built around USB and without a floppy drive.
  • Revision A and B share the same 233 MHz G3 platform; Revision B increased video memory.
Historical Significance
  • The iMac helped restore Apple’s consumer visibility and made USB peripherals a mainstream market.
  • Its friendly enclosure began the design language Apple extended across later consumer and professional products.
Collector’s Notes
  • Check the tray-loading optical drive, port cover, original keyboard and round mouse when identifying a complete system.
  • Revision details, plastics condition and CRT health materially affect collectability.
