Apple IIc

The Apple IIc condensed a 128KB Apple IIe-compatible system, floppy controller and serial interfaces into a slim portable enclosure with a carrying handle. Its external power supply and optional monochrome LCD made transport practical, although it was not battery powered.

Five internal expansion slots were replaced by built-in functions and external ports, trading flexibility for simplicity. Firmware revisions added improved drive support and memory expansion during the model's long production life.

Notable Features
  • Compact Snow White enclosure incorporated a carrying handle that doubled as a stand.
  • 128KB RAM, floppy control, serial ports, mouse support and 80-column functions were built in.
  • External expansion connector replaced the traditional internal card slots.
Historical Significance
  • Apple's first compact portable computer and an early expression of the Snow White design language.
  • Brought Apple II compatibility into an appliance-like system requiring little configuration.
Collector’s Notes
  • ROM revisions determine support for memory expansion, SmartPort devices and bug fixes.
  • Original external power supplies and matching IIc monitors complete the distinctive setup.
