Steve Wozniak is an American engineer, inventor and programmer who co-founded Apple Computer and designed the company's first computers. Before Apple, he worked at Hewlett-Packard and pursued computer design as a personal project, aiming to build an affordable machine that he and other hobbyists could use at home.
Wozniak designed the Apple I around the MOS Technology 6502 processor and demonstrated it at the Homebrew Computer Club in 1976. Its compact design helped Steve Jobs see a commercial opportunity, leading Wozniak, Jobs and Ronald Wayne to establish Apple Computer. Wozniak then created the Apple II, combining colour graphics, sound, expansion slots and an integrated BASIC interpreter in a practical consumer computer.
The Apple II became one of the foundational mass-market personal computers and gave Apple its early success. Wozniak later returned to university, supported education and technology charities, and pursued further engineering and entrepreneurial projects while remaining closely associated with the ideals of accessible personal computing.
