Newbury Laboratories was a British electronics company associated with the National Enterprise Board. At the end of the 1970s it inherited a computer project begun at Sinclair Radionics, where Mike Wakefield had designed the hardware and Basil Smith had developed the software.
Renamed the NewBrain, the machine was considered during the BBC's Computer Literacy Project and was announced in several configurations. Development delays meant Newbury could not supply it in time for the BBC contract, and the final design and production rights were sold to Grundy Business Systems. Although Newbury never launched the computer itself, its engineering work formed the foundation of the Grundy NewBrain released in 1982.
