Dick Smith Electronics was founded in Sydney by entrepreneur and electronics enthusiast Dick Smith in 1968. Its stores, mail-order catalogues, components and kits made electronics accessible to generations of hobbyists in Australia and New Zealand.
During the home-computer boom, the company sold its own branded systems alongside major international machines. The affordable System 80 introduced many users to TRS-80-compatible computing, while the locally developed Super-80 kit encouraged hands-on construction and programming. The VZ-200, VZ-300 and Dick Smith Wizzard further broadened its range, giving the retailer an important place in Australasian computer history.
