Canon traces its roots to a Tokyo camera laboratory established in 1933. Best known for imaging, the company also developed calculators, office equipment, printers and electronic systems whose technologies brought it into the personal-computer market during the early 1980s.
Canon introduced the AS-100 16-bit personal computer in 1982. Based on an Intel 8088 processor, it offered high-resolution colour graphics and was aimed at professional, scientific and business users. Canon later produced MSX computers for the Japanese market and became a major supplier of printing technology used throughout the wider computer industry.
