Tandy Color Computer 2 - Front View

Color Computer 2

Released in 1983, the Color Computer 2 was a sleeker, more cost-efficient revision of the original CoCo 1. Built around the same powerful Motorola 6809E CPU, the CoCo 2 offered expanded RAM options, an improved keyboard, and a compact, durable white case. It retained full compatibility with CoCo 1 software and peripherals while providing a cleaner user experience and better build quality. The system remained a favorite for BASIC programming, educational software, and home gaming until it was eventually succeeded by the CoCo 3 in 1986.

Notable Features

  • Improved keyboard and internal shielding over CoCo 1
  • More robust and efficient power supply and motherboard design
  • Fully backward compatible with all CoCo 1 software and accessories
  • White case gave it a more modern aesthetic, matching other early '80s home systems
  • Widely supported by Radio Shack stores, third-party developers, and hobbyist magazines

Historical Significance

  • Helped popularize the 6809 CPU among home programmers
  • Expanded Radio Shack’s user base with a more reliable and attractive design
  • Remained a popular educational and hobbyist platform even after IBM PC dominance began
  • Set the stage for the Color Computer 3 with standardized expansion paths and software libraries

Collector's Notes

  • Rarity: Low to moderate – fairly common but early variants and boxed units are collectible
  • Desirability: High among 6809 enthusiasts and BASIC programmers
  • Common Issues:
    • Slight RF interference issues on aging units
    • Failing cassette interface or worn cartridge port
    • Keyboard key bounce (on early models)
  • Display Tips: Great to show booted to Extended BASIC or playing arcade-style ports like Donkey King or Buzzard Bait
